This week, ES-CICAD, in cooperation with researchers from the Center for Court Innovation of New York, NY, and in cooperation with the National Institute of Psychiatry of Mexico, conducted on-site research in the first phase of the “Diagnostic Study of the Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, Drug Treatment Court” in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This study is the first of its kind in Latin America, and its results will provide observations and recommendations that will impact the not only the future of Drug Treatment Courts in Mexico, as it contemplates further expansion of the model, but drug treatment courts throughout the entire hemisphere.
Phase 1.
The first phase of the study was conducted
through individual interviews with authorities from the Judiciary and Health
sectors of the state of Nuevo Leon, the Guadalupe drug treatment court team, the
treatment center team, and with focus groups of current and former participants.
In addition to interviews and focus groups, two staffing and court sessions were
observed as well as a probation visit. The perspectives provided through these
interviews and observations will be analyzed and presented in a report created
by researchers at the Center for Court Innovation in coordination with
