National Authority

The Department of Justice Canada has the overall lead role for the National Drug Strategy. It exercises responsibility for policy and coordination; maintains the Strategy’s governance structure; leads and coordinates all Strategy communications activities; and takes lead responsibility for accountability, evaluation and performance reporting. The Department of Justice works in collaboration with the following 11 Government of Canada departments and agencies to achieve the goals of the Strategy:

  • Health Canada (leads the Prevention and Treatment Action Plans)
  • Public Safety Canada (leads the Enforcement Action Plan)
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police
  • Correctional Service of Canada
  • National Parole Board of Canada
  • Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (Public Prosecution Service of Canada)
  • Canada Border Services Agency
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada
  • Canada Revenue Agency
  • Public Works and Government Services Canada
  • Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada.
