Presentation of the MEM evaluation report on drug control for Panama

The Inter-American Commission for Drug Abuse Control (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS), serving as a hemispheric policy forum on the multifaceted aspects of the drug problem, carried out a mission to Panama City, Panama. The Executive Secretariat (ES) of CICAD, held meetings with government officials on October 14-15, 2015.

The ES/CICAD mission comprised of Ms. Sofia Kosmas, Coordinator of the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM) and Mr. Adrian Noble, MEM Specialist.

The MEM Sixth Round Evaluation Report on Drug Control for Panama was presented to Attorney General Kenya I. Porcell, Principal Representative of Panama to CICAD and Chairperson of the National Commission for the Study and Prevention of Drug-Related Crimes (CONAPRED) in the presence of Ambassador Pedro Vuskovic Céspedes, OAS Representative in Panama and Ms. Laura Montenegro, National Executive Secretary of CONAPRED.

Likewise, this report was presented to a group of high government officials of CONAPRED, as well as their technical staff, through two workshops to raise awareness of the Mechanism and by providing the results of the Panama report. At such event, a total of 27 officials of the Government of Panama attended, representing 21 institutions that generate information related to drug control in the country.

In line with presenting this report, meetings were held with Ms. Teresita Chavez, Policy Analyst at the Canadian Embassy and Captain Jose Willington Arias, of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section of the U.S. Embassy in Panama. The Governments of Canada and the United States have made considerable/ongoing donations to the MEM.
