Colombian Navy Chairs Meeting of the Group of Experts on Maritime Narcotrafficking in Cartagena

The Group of Experts on Maritime Narcotrafficking met at the Club Naval in Cartagena, Colombia from September 8 to 11, 2014. Admiral Evelio Ramírez Gafaro and Capitan Orlando Enrique Grisales Franceschi of the Colombian Navy chaired the meeting which included 44 experts from 12 member states (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States and Venezuela) as well observers from France and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Experts from participating countries discussed new developments in maritime narcotrafficking and the challenges faced in dealing with new threats. The Colombian Navy gave a live operational demonstration regarding the interception of a "go-fast" boat suspected of carrying drugs or other contraband. In addition to the "go-fast" boat, the demonstration included an OPV (Offshore Patrol Vessel), helicopter and pursuit boat.

The report and other products generated at this meeting will be presented to the CICAD Commission during its 56th Regular Session in Guatemala (November 19-21, 2014)
