Drug Trafficking on the Internet

On May 18, 2015 CICAD initiated a four-day seminar on the investigation of drug sales over the internet. This national seminar took place in San Jose, Costa Rica, with 25 national participants from 17 Ministries and offices which include the Ministry of Health,  Ministry of Commerce,  Interpol, the Pharmacy Federation, Customs, and the National Pharmaceutical Industry Association.

During the opening ceremony Ing. Guillermo Araya, Director General of the Costa Rican Institute on Drugs (ICD), Dr Alexis Castillo, President of the College of Doctors and Surgeons of Costa Rica (CMC), and Dr. Maria Esther Anachia, Deputy Health Minister offered welcoming remarks to the participants. 

During the inauguration, each speaker noted the growing threat posed by the sale of drugs over the internet. In doing so, they stressed the public health implications of people buying both pharmaceutical and illicit drugs over the internet. As such, this seminar was seen as both important and timely. All speakers thanked CICAD for bringing this seminar to Costa Rica. The Deputy Minister further expressed her appreciation to the Government of Canada for the financial support that it offered, making this important seminar possible.
