Inter-American Observatory on Drugs: Building a Drug Information Network with and for the Americas

Caribbean specialist to meet in Grenada in September

A major gathering of Caribbean drug specialists will take place in Grenada September 10-14 under the auspices of CICAD’s Inter-American Observatory on Drugs (OID) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The first half of the meeting under the OID's lead will focus on translating relevant epidemiological research findings into government policies and practices. On the last two days, the CARICOM Secretariat will be coordinating on demand reduction activities that are being funded by the European Community, with support from CICAD's Demand Reduction section.

In December of 2006, the Latin American national observatories met in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia to focus on the latest research in the region. The event had the support of the Spanish Plan National Drug Plan, and the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECI), as well as the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse. The participants created a research network called REDLA after its Spanish acronym (Red Epidiemiológica de Drogas para Latinoamérica) to promote epidemiological research among national observatories and universities in the region. A full report in Spanish is available on the OID website.

The presentations and discussion at the Cartagena meeting kept the attention of the participants. Forty specialists made presentations at the event.
