Description: |
CICAD has worked to assist the Caribbean Community Secretariat
(CARICOM) and other
regional institutions to develop a five-year demand reduction strategy for
the Caribbean, as well as to identify financial resources with which to
carry it out.
The five-year demand
reduction strategy would aim to enhance the region’s capacity to carry out
substance abuse prevention, treatment and research programs in a
coordinated way. The Strategy was based on a needs assessment financed by
the Government of the United Kingdom. It now consists of a set of
initiatives that seek to comprehensively address regional challenges
surrounding substance abuse, which includes the formation of the Caribbean
Demand Reduction Council (CDRC), according to refinements made in two
meetings sponsored by CICAD. The revised strategy was submitted to the
Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) in
October 2002 and was well-received. As a consequence, the approved
steering committee for the CDRC met under CICAD sponsorship
and assistance to refine and promote the strategy's proposals (see
press
release). Currently, steering committee members are preparing these
for presentation to the international donor community.
CICAD continues to be in
communication with the delegated entity at the CARICOM
Secretariat to be of service as possible to their initiative.
