First International Meeting of New
Doctorate Programs of Nursing in Latin America
Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, Nov 28-30, 2001
Background
In
1997, the CICAD started a pilot project in the
“Prevention of using of Illicit Drugs” for
Nursing Schools in Latin America.
The project is divided in two parts; part one was
to introduce the
content of the drug use, prevention, and treatment to the
undergraduate curriculum, this part of the project was
accomplished with the implementation of pilot programs of
research and community programs which were funded by seedy
grants. Part
two, is involved with the introduction of the content of
drugs’ use, prevention and treatment in the graduate
program curriculum (primarily in the area of research).
Therefore, creating opportunities for faculty to become
proficient in the area of research on drug abuse and
it’s management. The focus of the program also includes
the preparation of expert professionals that will be able
to create nursing centers for the delivery of nursing
care, for health
promotion, prevention and social rehabilitation because of
this health problem.
Five
Universities where new Doctorate in Nursing Programs are
being started or are in the process of starting new
programs are part of the project of “ Prevention and use
of Illicit Drugs”.
Naturally, these programs by virtue of curriculum
content enable the researcher to engage in the promotion
of the development and application of nursing in its
social context. By participation in this project of drugs
of the CICAD, Nursing recognizes that this phenomenon
being of social character has a significant impact in the
health of individuals. Besides being a social and health
problem it also becomes a multi focal problem, locally,
nationally, and, internationally. On the other hand,
Nursing also recognizes that this problem constitutes a
new area for nursing practice and for nursing research,
acknowledging this position, there is a necessity to aloud
more time for discussion of the new doctoral programs in
nursing. Considering this position, there is a need to consider a
proposal to have the first international reunion of the
New Doctorate Programs in Nursing in Latin America. The
College of Nursing at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo
León, and, as an integral part of the Pilot Project,
presented a proposal in the
“sixth Reunión Internacional del Proyecto Piloto
de Enfermería de CICAD para América Latina sobre Promoción
de la Salud, Prevención y Tratamiento del Uso y Abuso de
Drogas e Integración Social, realizada en Washington, D.
C” from the 25-28 de June 2001to have this meeting, for
this project the College of Nursing will ask for resources
from the CICAD/OEA.
