The Inter-American Observatory on Drugs (OID) is the CICAD section in charge of statistics, information and research. Its mission is to help promote and develop a drug information network for the Americas that offers objective, reliable and comparable information so that all member states can have a better understanding, of how best to design and implement programs and policies to fight the drug problem in all its dimensions.
In that context, and using information from different sources, primarily the answers from the countries to the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM), OID has designed an instrument to make data available
on drug supply and demand.
This instrument, entitled DRUG STATISTICS PROFILES BY COUNTRY, allows quickly and easy access to the updated indicators.
The following areas can be accessed by country breakdown:
- Bio-sociodemographic data
- Data on drug demand
- Data on drug supply and drug control
Each of the 34 OAS member states is accessed independently. Each area shows the indicators and corresponding values for the country selected. Also, each indicator, includes a chart describing the minimum and maximum values among the 34 countries with the objective of putting the selected country’s values into a collective context. It is important to note that the methodologies used are not necessarily the same ones for all the countries, as the objective is not to make comparisons among countries. Moreover, differences might exist in the age groups studied (indicated accordingly).
We hope that this data will be useful and we welcome any comments or suggestions on how to improve this instrument.
